Project master closet has been lingering on the to do list for some time now. It kinda morphed into one of those “rainy day” projects, which despite how many rainy days Louisianaimal has (millions maybe trillions) I still hadn’t touched the closet.
Inspiration recently came to me when a friend posted this article on Facebook.
I hadn’t heard of a wardrobe capsule before, but, perhaps it could bring me hope.
After all, project closet had been calling my name for almost year and I could hear it EVERY time I went in or near it.
The mother in the article I read, cites Unfancy as where she learned about the capsule. So I went to Unfancy and skimmed her posts. Caroline, the author, breaks her capsule down like this:
- 37 pieces total – 9 bottoms, 15 tops, 2 jackets, 2 dresses, 9 pairs of shoes.
- Rules in a nut shell (and paraphrased): The capsule changes every three months (with each season), you can buy 3-5 new items for the new capsule about 2 weeks before you change it.
- Everything else gets stored in bins/ given away/ up cycled
What I really like is that she encourages YOU to create a capsule what works for YOU.
Meaning theres no need to copy her numbers or rules exactly.
I was curious if the whole capsule idea would work for me, since I love bold colors and prints. Have you seen my rain boots?
…but just a glimpse of this closet gave me all the motivation I needed to give it a try. Also I will take this moment to apologize for the poor picture quality. Most of these were done at night, and geez, I just take better pictures with sun light.
So I got busy taking everything out and sorting: a goodwill stash, a trash stash and a storage stash.
Pretty soon our bedroom looked like this. Lovely right?
Half way through my clean out, the boy joined me! Well at first he was just jamming on his guitar, but then he joined in my mission and began cleaning out his side of the closet too. Whoo hoo!
Here is the closet now:
Wow. So. Much. Better.
Before and after shot:
I kept my bold colors and my patterns.
I’m currently doing an experiment to see how the capsule works with the colors, patterns and eclectic pieces I have. Unfancy mostly features monotoned items that mix and match pretty easily so we will see.
I’ve had my capsule for one week and…so far, so good.
A few things I’ve learned in my one week of capsuling:
- Its nice to have less in the closet – I can actually pick outfits quicker and with more ease. Plus I can walk in it, heck I could even jump rope!
- This is a pretty budget friendly way to stay in style
- I am more conscious of what I want to buy, and when I do buy (which isn’t for 2.5 months), it will be something I LOVE
- I noticed less laundry this week, win! (although I don’t know if we actually wore less clothes or if there was just less clothes on the ground in the closet that I put in to be washed because who knows if they were worn or not)
- I am reminded that I am blessed and I have plenty. Shopping online (which is my preference) makes me feel like I NEED so much. But I don’t. Clothes are not a fruit of the Spirit – that is what I really need more of (Joy, Peace, Patience, LOVE, Faithfulness, Goodness, Self Control, Gentleness and kindness). Yes, I had to google those to double check myself. I originally left out goodness, but thanks to google we got em all now 🙂
- Maybe less isn’t more, but less is enough.
