I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a life learner this past week. Last Sunday our preacher taught on this subject (Proverbs 1:8), and I took a continuing education class yesterday. Granted the class was required to keep my occupational therapy license current. It was good, but after running around all day as a therapist for the past 7 years, sitting down for 8 hours is pretty painful. Not to mention sitting all day legit increases inflammation. But thats another blog for another day.
Being a life learner really isn’t about academic classes anyway. In life, the classes are the environments and situations you find yourself in. I’ve listed my current caseload and subsequent recommendations below.
Tough class, but rewarding. Unfortunately, attendance is 24/7 and non-optional. There are lots of books for this class, but most are full of lies. Save your money. For example, the lie that most babies sleep through the night on their own around 4 months. Or the concept of hypnotizing yourself out of the pain of childbirth. I’ll take the epidural please. The professors can be pretty young (mine is only 8 months old) but surprisingly capable of teaching so much. They are very intuitive and may cry a lot, but don’t worry this is part of the course materal.
I recommend employing neighbors, friends and family as tutors. Also, good wine, as an effort to achieve my 2018 resolutions of course.
Out of all the classes I’ve taken in my entire life, my career as an Occupational Therapist must be one of my very favorites. I’m humbled and grateful for it everyday. My current schedule is pretty flexible, however class schedule varies depending on which career you choose and your boss. Professors may be bosses, patients, coworkers and/or students. The best part of this class is that unlike most classes, which can be costly, this one provides compensation, and if you’re full time, PTO. Class can be exhausting, but fulfilling. A good career will lead you on great adventures.
My recommendation is a good attitude and good coffee. Drink the coffee first, it will help with the attitude part.
The cool thing about this class is that you chose your only classmate. The horrifying thing about this class is that you choose your only classmate. Class lasts forever, so chose wisely, pray a lot, and seek counsel. Talk about expectations and values in your prerequisite classes (dating and engagement). I’ve been in this class for 4 years. There have been challenges, but overall its been a lot of fun. My one and only classmate is truly the smartest person I’ve ever met and he’s incredibly talented too. Professors include life events, jobs, children, and your one and only classmate.
My recommendation is to travel when possible, cook together and take dance classes. Not only will you be the cute couple at weddings, dance will help offset the inflammation from sitting.
This is an elective, inspired by my recent acquisition of an insta-pot and the boy and I’s new found love for cheesecake. Believe it or not, there is an art to making the perfect cheesecake. So far, we’ve made this chocolate cheesecake, Oreo cheesecake and our favorite yet, triple chocolate cheesecake. This class is truly a cake walk ;). Professors are blogs and cookbooks. Attendance is optional, but trust me, you’ll want to go.
My recommendation, should you take this specific class, is to buy a 7 inch spring form pan from Amazon. Your 9 inch pan will not fit in the insta-pot.
Side note regarding electives:
Elective classes should be fun, and are often short mini-semester classes. You don’t have to put a ton of effort as they can always be taken pass/fail. Class attendance is typically up to you. The important thing with electives is to pay attention to your passions and invest in them. Professors can be friends, books, google, youtube, other businesses or anything that provides teaching, instruction and inspiration.
I know your caseload looks different than mine, no one’s case load is going to be exactly the same. And classes will come and go, just as semesters come and go. They change with age and seasons and maybe even the weather. But whatever life classes you find yourself in, I hope you find yourself learning.
