Once upon a time the word “budget” was not in our vocabulary. This time was mostly when we were dating and then engaged, although there were 3 short married months there. We were both employed, had good jobs and once we were married we shared the same house which cut rent out of the picture for me. This was a lovely time. I have a friend who recently had a baby and decided to work part time. She refers to the time when her and her husband both worked full time as “the glory days.” Our dual income time felt like that ,too. Ah, the glory days.
Then the boy got a job transfer. It was actually a welcomed move at the time. It was a good step for him and I assumed since I worked in health care, I could work anywhere…
The only problem was that once we moved I had so. much. trouble finding a new job.
I guess one shouldn’t just bank on a job anywhere and everywhere. But we had already moved to a whole new state and set up our house and lives. And we weren’t going back. Not for a few years at least.
This forced us to one income…and to use that word I had dreaded for so long. A word I associated with old age and lameness: budget. So the boy began inputting all of our expenses into excel spreadsheets. There were numbers and charts and pie graphs, oh my! Slowly, we became more conscious of money and where it was going.
So, even though we are still learning how and where we can cut costs, we have found some big ways to shave off our monthly expenses. And I have realized that budgeting is really not so bad. Stay turned, I only have our wedding info on here at the moment, but there’s more money saving info to come!
