Back in May, after being inspired by some posts on Facebook I went on a wardrobe capsule journey.
If you don’t know what a wardrobe capsule is, have no worry. I didn’t either, until I did some research. The idea, in a nutshell, is to have only a small (ish) portion of clothes in your closet at one time. This way there aren’t loads of clothes to sift through when putting together an outfit on a daily basis. I gathered my inspiration from Unfancy, a blog where she pairs her closet down to 37 items for each season.
Its now been 3 months since I undertook this project and the outcomes are as follows:
Pros:
- I became much more creative with the items I had in my capsule as the rest of my closet was stored in plastic containers tucked into shelf ten feet off the floor.
- My closet was SO MUCH cleaner y’all. I could breathe, I could do a dance and maybe even a cartwheel in there. Whereas before was totally an ocean of clothes – up to my waist.
- I didn’t impulse shop.
- Ok. fine. Once I impulse shopped.
- Or twice. Twice is the honest truth. So it wasn’t a perfect 3 months of not buying clothes, but buying two clothing items over the entire summer is far better than I would have done. I’m not even a crazy shopper or anything, I just sometimes online shop when I’m bored which leads to buying stuff which when i’m being more intentional and honest, is just stuff I don’t NEED.
- My biggest concern was if this would work with different colors and patterns. The Unfancy blogger wears mostly white grey and off-white. Actually one day she said she was craving color and she wore something light blue, which still almost neutral (in my book). She is kinda like a jcrew kinda girl and whereas I’m more anthropolgie-esce (its my goal anyway). I have bright orange pants, a bright yellow top, a pink top, well you get the idea. As proof here is a picture of one of my favorite pairs of shoes, which, yes, I included in this wardrobe capsule.
But to my surprise, this wasn’t a huge obstacle. I just kept in mind what could go with what when I picked out my 37 items. Simple enough and, it worked!
Cons:
- Every now and then I did have the slightest longing for something I had boxed away. It was fleeting and fine, but I can’t deny it.
- I did, at times, feel a bit limited, but this is where the creativity came into play so I’m listing both sides of this the pro part above and the con part here.
- The biggest con is that now its technically time to change the wardrobe out and lets be real. I’m dreading it because I am totally style lazy. This means I have to get ALL those boxes down again, re-decide what should or shouldn’t be in the fall season wardrobe. Put everything else back away. Can I get some cheese with my whine already!?
Overall I’d definitely recommend trying the capsule or at least reading about it and creating a version that fits your lifestyle. I think for me I may eventually just have to tailor it to changing the capsule only twice a year. After all in Lousianaimal we only have like dire heat season and mildly cool season. And then rain. Lots of rain in april. I haven’t quite brought myself to revamp the capsule yet, but maybe next week I’ll drink a few extra shots of espresso and tackle it. I’ll let you know how it goes, or doesn’t go. We shall see..
