Happy Mardi Gras y’all!
Even though Texas will always be my favorite state, I do love the celebration of Mardi Gras, which is a BIG deal here in Louisiana. Its fun, its silly and, hey, its a day off work! Actually, the boy and I decided to take Monday and Tuesday off, so we had a super extended weekend, which was wonderful. But why is it never long enough?!
We attempted to do some people watching in the French Quarter today, but once we realized this would include a $50.00 parking fee and the smell of urine, we quickly aborted our mission. Just no.
We did, however, pick up and consume the most beautiful king cake from a local bakery here on the Northshore. Its a french style king cake, not near as sweet as the dense cinnamon-roll ones. Instead, its filled with layers of flakey dough and a slightly sweet after taste. It’s like a buttery croissant meets king cake. We will be getting another one of these next year.
The most important aspect of Mardi Gras is not the people watching or the parades, although we do have some good ones. My personal favorite is the Krewe De Paws, a dog parade.
Maybe something for Bourbon to aspire to? Haha.
There’s also the Abita Springs Push Mow parade, which I’ve never attended, but sounds pretty hilarious. Yes, it includes decorated lawn mowers.
But greater than all that, is just spending time with friends, neighbors and family. All of which we managed to do on our long break. This even included some Catan and the game Clue too. (The boy won clue, he’d want you to know that.)
There was also a good amount of adulting we did, too though. We managed to finish our taxes (ugh) and complete a Lamaze class.
I wasn’t sure what to expect out of Lamaze, other than hee hee hoo hoo, but I was hoping it’d be good, since it was from 9-4pm on Saturday. That’s a pretty big commitment, ya know?
Overall, I did think it was beneficial. We reviewed all the stages of labor and watched 3 natural births (lucky us). We also learned several breathing and massage techniques to help with labor.
Then we practiced visualizing contractions and implementing our newly learned techniques while our partner squeezed our wrist to mimic a contraction.
I sure hope this is what a real contraction feels like, but I’ve been told its not an accurate representation.
My favorite part class was seeing all the guys, boy included, treat their wives/partners with so much care and support.
The boy has continued practicing the massage techniques he learned over the last few days. So, at this point, I’m really loving Lamaze.
And yes, I did wear my preggars pun Mardi Gras shirt all weekend. It’ll be retired quite a while after this year, so had to get all the use I could out of it!
Tomorrow its back to normal life. Even loving my work, I wish I had more time to relax! But there’s always Mardi Gras 2018 to look forward to! And next year will include one sweet baby Rose!
