This week has yielded quite a bit of rain for Louisiana.
There was hail, flooded streets, closed schools. It was cray.
But…
I can’t complain, because I’m always looking for a good reason to rock my rain boots! They make me want to jump on the bed and eat gummy bears.
And partake in a rainy day craft…
like making this Anthropologie copy cat DIY wooden block calendar.
I’ll admit I have quite the love/hate relationship with that store.
One the one hand, wow everything is super cute and on the other hand, well gosh, we’ll have to sell our kidneys in the black market to buy it. I often check the sale page for cute things, which is when I came across this listing for a wooden block calendar. I am a huge fan of functional decor for the house, so I really considered buying it…
until I read the 1 star review that stated that the real thing was very ugly and looked nothing like the picture.
Its so simple, I thought I’d just make my own. Plus the original cost of this thing was $68, which should be illegal. Its blocks. And paint. Thats all.
Here is how I did mine, which I am quite happy with.
Materials:
- Acrylic Paint (I used cream, mellon and lime green, you’ll see yellow in the picture, but I decided not to use it when I started painting the blocks)
- Paint brush
- Painters tape
- Letters and numbers for blocks
- 14 1.5 inch wooden blocks (can be purchased at craft store)
Directions:
- Before I began painting my blocks, I sealed them with wood sealant. This is optional, but I do think it makes the paint pop nicely.
- Tape off your blocks. Be as creative as you want with this. I did mine diagonal, but you could really do any patterns you like.
- Paint your blocks. Again, creative as you like. I painted 7 mellon, 4 green and 2 cream. I left one blank to be the all numbers block.
- After your paint drys place numbers and letters on your blocks. You can either hand paint them or take the easy route which is what I did. I let my cricut cut mine out, but another option would be to buy stickers at the craft store and stick them on. This was the only part I found tricky, as I had to do a bit of problem solving to figure out which letters and numbers I’d need and what blocks they could and could not go on.
- Here’s the run down of which letters I placed together on blocks so that they could spell each short month and the abbreviations for each long month:
- A, E
- B, C
- D, N
- F, G, H
- I, J
- L, O
- P, M
- U, S
- T
- Y, R
- 1,2,3,4,5,6
- 1,2
- 0,3
- left this one blank
* I know this isn’t the ONLY way it can be done, its just the method I used
And then you have a DIY wooden block calendar.
Much cheaper than $68, plus I love it. My favorite thing is that you can put the blocks all kinds of ways.
Tons of options. I’ll probably change my stack design up each month, just to be real crazy:)
